Yep they're really closing the gap. According to sources in a global point of view they're the second largest mobile OS market handler which is slightly below Nokia's Symbian. Now to be honest Nokia has been in the field like for ages but Google... what they've achieved within few years is pretty amazing.
This also shows us the power of the web. If you control the traffic then you can pretty much control everything. Although we gotta give some credit to the developers as Android market is one of the largest application (free and premium ones) markets for any mobile OS which grows daily. This also shows us the power of opensource applications (although it is not as "open" as the GNU Linux is but still pretty good though).
Because of its raw power, features and stability a lots of electronic gadget manufactures such as Motorola, HTC, Olive smart, etc are starting to switch to the Android which is not good for Nokia or any other major manufacture.
